The Black Phone’s Jacob Moran Will Be Featured in NBC Show That Airs October. Learn His Story!
Jacob Moran can be described with the word talented. He is a professional actor and student. He’s a freshman in high school who has been selected into a special program called the “Innovation Diploma,” where students learn and work alongside companies to grow as design thinkers and problem solvers.
When he was 18 months old, Jacob started playing the drums, a talent that came naturally for him from his father. He auditioned for the musical “School of Rock” when he was 10 years old. After seeing the musical live, he told his mom that is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He sent in a tape and auditioned. However, he didn’t book the show. Many people would’ve just given up, but Jacob is not like many people.
He auditioned again the following year and he landed the role for the first National Broadway Tour for The School of Rock. Only a few weeks later rehearsals began in California and he embarked on his first professional adventure, performing more than 300 shows in 33 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Jacob’s big takeaway from this experience was, “Don’t give up. The process is part of the experience and if you want something, keep trying.”
“I feel the biggest challenge when starting out is having the opportunity to get in front of the right people. I am learning that building connections with people in the industry at every level is important. One of my coaches, Lexi Sharp, describes this as planting seeds. I look at the audition as the job and the reward is when you book the role. My goal with each audition is to leave a lasting impression on the people in the industry. One day they may think of you and hopefully one day you can help them too!”
After the tour, Jacob decided that his passion was inside television and film. Last year, he filmed “The Black Phone”, a Universal and Blumhouse feature film that grossed over $100 million in the first month globally. Jacob has been busy and will be featured in the upcoming film projects “New Shoes” and “The Jump”. “Regarding Veronica,” another feature film is in production next year, as well as a role in an episode of a popular NBC television show that will be airing this October.
Having his whole career ahead of him, Jacob works hard to continue excelling at what he loves, but also appreciates every step of the journey. “It’s a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, and I am enjoying every moment along the way. However, I am always aware that you are only as good as your last job. So, while I really rely on working, I do know that nothing is guaranteed and I cherish each opportunity.”
Jacob is also utilizing his resources and experiences through The M.E.C.A. Project. M.E.C.A provides best-in-class mental and emotional education, tools and resources, to teens and the people that care about them. Jacob is a founding member of M.E.C.A.’s teen board and provides input on the social media platforms and development of the non-profit. “Getting to work on a national board with my peers, many of whom are also in the entertainment industry, has been very fulfilling. I have seen so many around me, including members of my own family, suffer from anxiety, so I am very passionate about creating resources for those in need.”
Alongside Jacob’s involvement in M.E.C.A., his family is an executive producer of “Anxious Nation”, a documentary that sheds a powerful light on the anxiety that young people face and the impact it has on them and their families.
